What Is Professional Liability Insurance (E&O) and Who Needs It?
General liability covers accidents. Professional liability covers something different β claims that your professional advice, service, or skill caused a client financial harm or physical injury. If you provide a service where a mistake in your work could hurt someone, you likely need it.
What professional liability covers
- Claims that your professional advice or recommendation was wrong
- Claims that your service was negligently performed
- Claims that you failed to deliver what was contracted
- Legal defense costs, even for unfounded claims
What professional liability does NOT cover
- Intentional wrongdoing or fraud
- Bodily injury from accidents (that's GL)
- Criminal acts
- Claims arising before your coverage start date (unless you have prior acts coverage)
Who needs professional liability?
You need it if clients could claim your work or advice caused them harm:
| Business type | Why professional liability matters |
|---|---|
| Personal trainers, yoga instructors | Instruction technique claims, injury from exercise programming |
| Estheticians, lash techs | Chemical burns, skin reactions, service-caused damage |
| Wedding photographers | Lost files, missed shots, failure to deliver |
| Event planners, DJs | Vendor no-shows, failed event execution claims |
| Dog trainers | Training methods causing behavioral harm claims |
| Swim instructors, coaches | Improper instruction causing injury |
| Bookkeepers, consultants | Bad advice resulting in financial loss |
How it's different from GL
The key distinction: GL covers what happens during the physical delivery of your service (accidents, damage, injury). Professional liability covers claims about the quality or outcome of your service (you did it wrong, you didn't deliver, your advice caused harm).
Example: A yoga instructor's student trips on a mat block during class β GL claim. The same student claims the instructor's adjustment technique caused a back injury β professional liability claim.
